Not only many monuments but also entire villages were forgotten in the post-communist period. The mining settlement of Kadykchan is an excellent example. It is located in the Magadan region. This settlement is considered one of the most terrifying ghost towns in Russia today. A very depressing atmosphere reigns in an abandoned settlement. If you look around its deserted houses, it may seem that the locals left them in an incredible hurry. You can see forgotten calendars on the walls, pieces of furniture, and children's toys in some deserted apartments even today.
You can see the ruined old square in the center of the settlement. A monument to V. I. Lenin is installed on it. Large deposits of precious metals were discovered in the vicinity of the settlement in the 20s of the last century. A lot of cheap labor was needed to develop the mines. The settlement of Kadykchan was built by prisoners, as well as many other mining settlements of the Magadan region. It began to be settled in 1943. Active mining of not only gold but also coal was carried out in local mines. Its presence has become the main condition for the existence of residents.
You can see many posters and signs with communist slogans even today while walking through the abandoned settlement. These posters call for work and dedication. More than 12,000 people lived in the settlement during its heyday. Hospitals, schools and kindergartens, a cinema, and a large sports complex operated in it. The settlement was abolished relatively recently, in 2003. About a thousand people lived in it a year earlier according to the official census.
