Each year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival – traditionally oriental holiday - celebrates spring in Washington. It is a truly unique event that attracts the attention of thousands of people. In 1912 the mayor of Tokyo donated Washington 3000 cherry seedlings as a sign of friendship and cooperation between the great cities. It was decided then to plant the seedlings on the territory of the Potomac Park. The trees had taken roots very quickly. And more than a hundred years they delight citizens and tourists with their splendid blossoming every spring.
The first festival was held in 1935. The modern festival, which lasts 5 weeks, attracts to the city more than 700 000 foreign guests. The contemporary celebration is dedicated to various fields of culture and art. Every day in Washington you can observe interesting exhibitions, seminars and special events.
