Transylvania also has salt mines, which have earned worldwide fame and became popular among fans of industrial tourism. Old salt mines are the main attraction of the small town of Turda, which a few years ago has been one of the largest salt manufacturing centers in Romania. Salina Turda would certainly appeal to fans of science fiction films, as amazing landscapes, which open during the descent into the mine, look like the scenery for films about extraterrestrial civilizations.
The reason for this is widespread deposition of salt crystals forming a unique view. Sometimes they may be twisted, but some of the tunnels look very impressive and harmonious. Salina Turda is one of the few abandoned mines in the world, which has been completely refurbished for tourist needs. Today it’s a large-scale and well-equipped leisure center with playgrounds, cozy seating areas, and, that’s the most important, with very interesting extreme rides.
