Not far from the main train station there is the unique Sofuku-ji Temple, the oldest of its kind in the country. The temple was founded in 1195; it has perfectly preserved to this day and has a great value from an architectural point of view. The main building houses the religious artifact, Korean bell of bronze; it has been brought to the temple on the first day of its foundation.
Among the most visited cultural institutions remains Hakata Machiya Folk Museum acquainting visitors with features of handicraft and national traditions. Among its exhibits there are hundreds of unique handicrafts, traditional costumes and jewelry, musical instruments and other items that were used during national holidays and festivals.
One of the major attractions is located in the picturesque Higashi Koen park. We are talking about the monument to the founder of the Nichiren Buddhism, whose achievements have played an important role in the development of local culture and religious traditions.
