Okayama has many Japanese restaurants where you can try traditional regional dishes. However, tourists are much more interested in food markets and street stalls where they sell exotic local delicacies. A common snack is charcoal-roasted sweet potato "Yaki Imo", which is offered at every step in the city. Usually, such potatoes are sold from carts that ply the city's streets and inform buyers through a loudspeaker. Several hundred stores in Okayama sell Crepes so beloved by locals. Customers are offered dozens of fillings to crepes. They can be prepared with salted fish and meat, fruits, various creams, and chocolate paste. Some local cafes serve such pancakes too, but the tastiest are still served at street stalls.
Those who'd rather prefer hearty hot meals should look for street tents offering Nikuman. This is how they call Chinese-style steamed meat buns. They are quite big, so a portion usually consists of two buns. It is customary to fill them with pork, which turns out to be very juicy. Fans of seafood will like Okayama for sea delicacies prepared and sold at every turn. Restaurants offer their guests all kinds of shrimp, squid, various types of fish, shellfish, and seaweed.
