Driving in China – Recommendations, Tips and Tricks

Previous tips
12. In spite of the fact that local drivers rarely follow the established speed limit, each road type in the country has its own restrictions. For example, in the city the permitted speed is from 40 to 80 km/h. The limit in the specific area is indicated on road signs. In the country, the maximum permitted speed is 80 km/h, and on motorways it ranges from 100 to 120 km/h.
13. The excess of speed of 10 - 20 km/h on local roads is absolutely common. Not all roads are equipped with cameras and radars, and this fact is widely used by Chinese drivers who seem to be always in a hurry. The presence of cameras is usually marked with special road signs, and this fact also makes it easier to break the rules. Speeding fines are rather big though. If you exceed the speed by just 20 km/h, you may be forced to pay a fine of 2,000 Yuan.
14. When it comes to describing the general state of roads in the country, it can be safely called quite satisfactory. Looking at local roads, you will see a very interesting contrast - modern highways with high quality surface are often located close to old roads, where it is dangerous to drive at a speed of just 20 km/h.

Hints on Car Hire in China

When choosing a car for your China trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

During your booking, we will offer you to take a full coverage of the franchise ('No Risk' or 'No Excess' package). If you book a car without full coverage, it is recommended to take it at the pick-up time - this will substantially reduce your financial liability in China for the whole rental period.

During your car pick-up in China, do not forget to check what to do in breakdown-, accident- or theft-cases. Most of our offers include 'Breakdown Assistance' package. Besides this, every rental office would be happy to assist you with this package.

Prior to the car return, please check your voucher for the fuel conditions. If it is indicated that a driver shall return the car with a full tank, do not forget to refuel it on the way back, this will save you from additional charges at the rental office.

15. The contrast is best seen on national roads, the main distinguishing feature of which is their length. Some national roads are high quality highways, on which it is possible to drive comfortably at a speed of 110 km/h, while other national roads do not even have the asphalt surface.
16. There are several high quality motorways in the eastern part of the country, so a journey there will surely leave many memorable and positive impressions. When traveling to other parts of China, do not be surprised if you see large cracks or open hatches on the road surface.
17. Every year, approximately 60,000 people die on the roads of the country because of road accidents. Within last several years, the traffic regulations have become significantly severer in China. Modern drivers can get a huge fine not only for speeding, but also for a usual cell phone talk.
18. All serious traffic violations bring not only fines, but also special penalty points. Upon reaching a critical level of these penalty points, the driving license is temporarily suspended.
19. Drivers are allowed to get no more than 12 penalty points a year. Note that for certain serious traffic violations the offender will receive as many as 6 points. Passing a yellow or red light is one of these violations.
20. There is also a number of violations that have the immediate cancellation of the driving license as punishment. These are driving under the influence of alcohol, the use of false number plates and leaving the scene of the accident.
21. Local drivers use both light and sound signals when they want to warn other traffic participants about their intention to make a maneuver. Therefore, before overtaking some vehicle, foreign drivers are recommended to turn the left turn signal on or press the horn.
22. It should be noted that in the residential area sound signals can be used only in case of a serious danger. You will see many road signs that notify drivers that they shouldn’t honk without any particular need. However, local drivers usually do not consider this rule “mandatory”.
