Australia is an extraordinary country, occupying a whole continent, including several islands. The largest and oldest city in the country is Sydney, standing on the shore of the Tasman Sea bay. Walking along it can take several days, which is not surprising: the city has the most famous and amazing tourist sites in Australia. Among them is the Sydney Opera House. This symbol of the country is the creation of the Danish architect Jorn Utzon. The Structure stands on stilts right in the water. Its massive roof, reminiscent of flying sails or giant shells, is supported by metal cables. The unusual design of this masterpiece of modern architecture symbolizes the frozen image of music.
In Sydney, is situated the national shrine of Australia – the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. Its Neo-Gothic building was erected from golden sandstone in place of the former, destroyed by fire in the second half of the 19th century. The architecture of the Cathedral is characteristic of the English Gothic Renaissance. The interior is decorated with magnificent stained-glass windows, and masterpieces of painting. One of Australia’s most interesting attractions is Fort Denison, built on the site of a prison for dangerous criminals. Today, the fortress is part of the Sydney Harbor National Park complex. There is an artillery museum on its territory. One of the most unusual constructions of the country is the Sydney Tower. High-speed elevators bring tourists to the observation deck, located at an altitude of more than two hundred meters, from where amazing views of the metropolis with its skyscrapers, ships in the bay, and the azure ocean openings are seen.
