Venlo is relatively young as it was granted the city status only approximately 700 years ago. However, first settlements on the city of the modern city appeared much earlier. Water and convenient location made this area comfortable for living. Already in the Middle Ages it was an important trading post. Strategic location of Venlo made it a constant target for all kinds of sieges and battles. In different times, the city belonged to the Spanish, French, and the Dutch Republic. The city was growing and expanding in size, so its original walls became an obstacle. In the 19th century, it was decided to demolish the old walls, so the city could continue growing.
The main landmark of Venlo – the City Hall building – is located not far from the main city square. It is a beautiful gothic style building with high spires that might look a bit gloomy at a glance. However, the building is not deprived of its special charm. The landmark is open for visitors, so everyone is welcome to walk in long corridors of the Town Hall and explore spacious halls, admiring their sumptuous design. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

There are interesting religious sights in Venlo. One of these is the church Sint-Martinuskerk, which catches the eye from the very first minutes – all thanks to its majestic and beautiful appearance. The building was erected in the 15th-16th centuries in the Gothic style. The tower of the cathedral was rebuilt three times. The Protestant church Rijksmonument Joriskerk was given the status of the national monument. It was originally built in the 16th century and was a Catholic church. It was then expanded in the 17th century, received its current look, and became a Protestant establishment. It is a very beautiful church, certainly worth visiting.
Another interesting religious attraction to visit is the Rijksmonument Sint Jacobskerk. The church has been sited at this place since 1523. It was however destroyed in the 16th century, and only in 1932 was it restored. However, the cathedral was yet to “enjoy” its new life, before disaster struck in the form of World War II, from which it suffered greatly. As a result, only the remains of the chapel can be seen today. You should definitely look at Stadskantoor – a unique building, famous for its beautiful green facade. Part of what makes it remarkable is that the raw materials used for its construction are designed in such a way that they can be reused later, that is, cradle-to-cradle, or non-waste production. This technology is a manifestation of how much the Dutch care about the ecology.

One of the places in Venlo that should definitely be visited is called Kasteeltuinen Arcen. Here it seems as if the fairy tale comes to life – the gardens are so beautiful. Although the territory of the gardens is not what you will consider large due to the fact that you can go around in one day, it is however not out of place to say that they are definitely worth paying a visit. The gardens are divided by topics – there is a greenhouse, rose garden, water gardens, a Japanese garden, and an English garden. The oldest tree here is Sequoia, which was planted in 1904. Besides the fact that you can also look at animals in the garden, as there is a zoo on the site, you can visit a castle and a museum, as well as enjoy beautiful views of lakes, fountains, and picturesque sculptures of modern art.
Another interesting historical site worth visiting is the Kasteel De Keverberg. It looks quite unusual in the sense that what first catches your eyes are the glass designs of the building, rather than the thick walls that usually decorate castles. It was created so, in order to provide a beautiful view of the river from the interior of the castle. There is also an elevator there that has helped create a feel of modernity, as well as also making movement more comfortable and convenient. The building was destroyed during World War II, but it was however beautifully restored afterward. The castle is located on an artificial hill on the bank of the River Meuse. It is also worth mentioning that temporary exhibitions are often held here.
