Sightseeing in Tarragona - what to see. Complete travel guide

This picturesque Spanish town is situated on the Mediterranean coast. Rambla Vella Street is considered the central part of Tarragona. This street conventionally divides the town into two parts. The northern part of the town is the location of old quarters. Here you will see buildings that stand here from the reign of the Roman Empire. The old town is surrounded by high fortifying wall, which is also one of the main attractions. The southern part of Tarragona is a new one. Here are located numerous modern business centers, restaurants and hotels.
Start your introduction with this town from visiting the so-called Mediterranean balcony. This is a spacious observation deck, which is located on a hill. The deck features breathtaking views of the coast. From here you can see the ruins of an ancient amphitheater, which is also known as the main attraction of the Old Town. This arena was built for 12 000 spectators, and so here often took place numerous performances and gladiator fights. Near the amphitheater is located the church of Santa Maria del Miracle, the construction of which took place in the 12th century. This is a beautiful Gothic building, which is reminiscent of the tragic events of the past. The church was built in the memory of first Christians of Tarragona, who had been executed on the stage of the amphitheater.
Several attractions, which are left from the Roman era, can be found in Ray Square. The Palace of the Roman governor and the local Circus are certainly very popular, but Roman Museum is still the most visited one. The museum’s basement leads to the system of underground passages, which have been discovered by archaeologists. This is a true underground maze with many intricate passages and secret rooms. Visitors can learn more about the archaeological finds of this place in National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
One of the busiest tourist sites in the city is the Rambla Nova Boulevard. It starts at the bus station and runs miles short of the coast. On its both sides still remain beautiful historical buildings in Art Nouveau style. You can see a lot of symbolic monuments here, as well. The boulevard is a real open-air cultural center where street entertainers and musicians appear every day. You can take pictures with the so-called living sculptures and visit one of the popular restaurants.
The Archaeological Museum has been one of the most visited destinations in the city. All its exhibits were discovered directly on its territory. Visitors can admire antique sculptures and ceramics, unique Roman mosaics, and appreciate collections of ancient weapons. The formation of the museum's collection began in the 19th century. Now, they show documentary films about the history of the city every day and hold various thematic events.
Of particular interest is the Kasteljarnau House Museum. This luxurious 15th-century mansion formerly belonged to a famous aristocrat, after whom it got its name. Within the walls of the historic mansion nowadays is an interesting museum that stores collections of antique furniture of the 18th - 19th centuries, works of art, as well as Chinese porcelain and medieval frescoes.
In the vicinity of Tarragona, the El Medol quarry is situated. It will be of interest to those who prefer unusual sights. The development of the quarry started in the 2nd century BC. The stone was used to build many Roman colonies, including Tarraco. The main feature of the quarry is the Obelisk column 16 m long. Supposedly, it was from the place of its location that quarrying began.
The so-called Balcony of Europe is an irreplaceable symbol of the city. It is an observation deck near the coast, at an altitude of 23 meters. It offers a wonderful view of the Roman amphitheater, roofs of the houses and the embankment. For the convenience of visitors, it is equipped with benches and a cafe. Visitors should definitely hold its iron fencing. Local residents believe that it brings good luck.
