It is believed that Skopje was founded in 518 by the order of Emperor Justinian I. The disaster, which had killed thousands of lives in 518, was not the last tragedy in the history of the city. Skopje has survived after numerous wars, and the city has been captured by the Turks and then the Austrians. In 1555 the nature made another strike, and a few years later here started an epidemic of plague.
