Travel Guide to Skopje, Macedonia

The capital of Macedonia is a city with dramatic and fascinating history. Here you will find simply everything for interesting rest - temples of wonderful beauty and cozy streets, ancient palaces and magnificent parks, shops and markets, and, of course, numerous restaurants and entertainment centers.
It is believed that Skopje was founded in 518 by the order of Emperor Justinian I. However, the settlements on the territory of the modern city have existed before this, but the majority of those buildings were destroyed by the strong earthquake. The beginning of the city’s official history starts once it has been rebuilt by the order of the Byzantine ruler. The disaster, which had killed thousands of lives in 518, was not the last tragedy in the history of the city. Skopje has survived after numerous wars, and the city has been captured by the Turks and then the Austrians. In 1555 the nature made another strike, and a few years later here started an epidemic of plague.
The military destruction, earthquakes and terrible epidemics are now far in the past. Nowadays Skopje is a wonderful tourist destination with numerous iconic locations. Cozy and welcoming atmosphere is perfect for unhurried rest. Here is the best place to run away from the daily hustle, bustle and relax. Among the surviving monuments we should definitely distinguish the stone bridge, which has become the symbol of the city. The old towers of Daut Pasha now hold the exhibition of the local art gallery with works of famous sculptors and painters. The oldest architectural monument of the city is Calais Castle, which was built immediately after the earthquake of 518. The most popular market of the city is called "old Skopje bazaar" and is located in the old part of Skopje. Here you will find the work of artisans and largest choice of souvenirs and shops that make crafts and souvenirs by order.
