The city hosts the oldest church in California. Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala was established in 1769. In course of its long history the building of basilica has been many times destroyed and renovated. In 1775 the basilica was ruined by native resistance. In 1803 a natural disaster badly damaged this religious construction. Architects have totally renovated and restored the building so today the basilica appears to the city guests in all its majestic glory.
One of the most mysterious landmarks of the city is considered to be a Queen Anne Victorian mansion named the Villa Montezuma.
