Nerja is located on the east coast of the Costa del Sol. This place looks more like a typical Spanish village rather than a modern resort. This is a real piece of wild nature that lures tourists by spacious beaches and splendid caves. The beaches here are quite typical for the Mediterranean resorts, but there’s one thing that is truly special – only here you will find enormously large boulders and rocks that are cut into the coast and make the nature of Nerja absolutely unforgettable.

First settlements on the territory of the modern Nerja appeared yet in the prehistoric times. The best proof for this is the rock paintings, which have been discovered in caves. The first drawings were discovered by accident - local boys reported about them. It happened in 1959. Since that time Nerja has been visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world, who come to look at the cave paintings. The majority of the excursion routes are also associated with these wonder caves, some of which have been converted into archaeological museums and carefully keep collections of valuable artifacts.

As the number of visitors grows every year, more tourist facilities are needed. However, there are still no high-rise buildings in the town. As a rule, here are built of two- or three-story buildings, which are stretched on long streets along the coast. The observation area called the Balcony of Europe has become one of the most popular places of Nerja. The area is built on one of the rocks near the shore. An interesting historic structure is the Acueducto del Águila, also commonly known as the Eagle Bridge. The exact date of its construction is unknown, the beautiful bridge lies over a deep gorge and has about 40 arches. Surrounded by hills covered with lush vegetation, the bridge has a fascinating look. Usually, tourists visit it as part of a sightseeing tour on the way to the famous local caves.

One of the main advantages of the miniature resort is picturesque beaches, each of which has its own unique features. Away from the main tourist areas is El Playazo beach that becomes a venue for holding numerous festivals in summer. During the day, the traditional beach atmosphere reigns on the coast, but when darkness falls, it turns into a huge open-air disco where you can have fun until dawn.

A great choice for travelers who prefer relaxing in a comfortable environment is Playa La Torrecilla. Its length is about 300 meters; the fully-equipped beach has its own rental centers for hiring beach equipment, as well as several excellent restaurants. In high season the beach is always full of vacationers, so tourists are advised to go to the beach as early as possible.

A popular attraction of the resort is the charming beach of Playa El with a length of about 200 meters located in a beautiful bay. This miniature beach is framed by beautiful cliffs in which locals have carved their first homes hundreds of years ago. Some of these houses have survived to this day, they are considered unique historical monuments.

Several hundred years ago, all Nerja coast was built up with watchtowers, but almost all of them were completely destroyed. Today we can see only two surviving towers, the highest and most famous is Torre de Macaca rising to an altitude of 12 meters. Despite the fact that the tower has no special architectural value, the locals still care about its safety. Maro Tower is also well-preserved, it is located on a very picturesque stretch of the coast. The ruins of some towers that can be seen during the excursion lie on the same coast.
