A remarkable landmark of Montpellier is the Tour de la Babote being a survived part of the wall which is during the early Middle Ages surrounded the city. In the course of long history the tower has changed its look and appearance for several times and has been added with new levels meanwhile previous ones have been reconstructed. The Tour de la Babote is the only one from 25 towers which has survived till present days. The height of the construction is 53m. When another architectural masterpiece, Porte du Peyrou, was constructed, François d'Orbay took his inspiration from the Porte Saint-Denis, the first triumphal arch in Paris. The construction was completed in 1693. In 1715, bas reliefs and inscriptions lauding the Sun King appeared on the arch. Bas reliefs depict three important events taking place during the reign of Louis XIV: the capture of Namur, the excavation of Canal du Midi that links the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean Sea, and the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. On one of the bas reliefs, you can see the Sun King depicted as Hercules. Aqueduc de Saint-Clément is one of the main landmarks of the city. It was constructed in 1772 as a channel that would supply Montpellier with water from Saint-Clement. The aqueduct was modeled on the Pont du Gard in Nimes.
You should also complete your tourist route with a trip to Chateau de Flaugergues that is famous even outside France with its wonderful garden. The castle gained its present appearance in the late 18th century. The owner of the castle, Etienne de Flaugergues, took his inspiration from Italian villas.
