Culture of Milos Island. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

In most cases, you will begin your acquaintance with the island from the main local port – the village of Adamas. Here you can admire not only the typical Cycladic architecture but also the magnificent Church of the Holy Trinity. This religious institution is one of the oldest among those preserved on the island. Inside, the vaults and walls are covered with ancient frescoes, and in the sanctuary of the temple, there is a whole collection of ancient and very valuable objects. If you want, you can visit the Adamas Metals Museum, which exposition allows you to get a closer look at the variety of local minerals.
It’s simply impossible to imagine rest on Milos without visiting its amazing beaches. The most beautiful beach on the island is Papafragos, the great natural attraction. The water in … Open
You can get to the capital of the island, Plaka, either on foot, or by bicycle, or by motor scooter – the road to the city is very narrow. Nevertheless, it is worth visiting. Unique architecture, as if not influenced by time, will interest many travelers. You can explore the local churches – Panagia Korfiatissa, Panagia Thalassitra, Mesa Panagia. In Plaka, you can see the knight's castle, built in the distant 13th century. It is worth looking into the Archaeological Museum of Milos, where the richest collection of artifacts from different eras is collected, and the Historical and Ethnographic Museum, which will acquaint you with the items of clothing and interior used by local residents centuries ago.
In the village of Tripiti, you can see the ancient theater, built, presumably, in 3-4 century BC, and very well preserved. The tribune, the stage, the orchestra pit – all this is still well distinguishable. In addition to the theater, here you can find the remains of the ancient city wall and the ruins of several ancient temples. It was here, by the way, where in 1820 an antique statue was found, which is now located in the Louvre and known as Venus de Milo. A plaster cast of the statue you can see in the Archaeological Museum of Plaka. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

On Milos there are also Filakopi, the ruins of one of the largest Greek settlements, whose heyday fell on 3300-1100 BC. Here you can see the houses, squares, and temples of the ancient city. The local palace of Megaro, the sanctuary and the wall of the Cyclades, created from huge boulders, is well preserved for its age. The scientists and archaeologists from around the world are still working in Filakopi, always bringing new parts of the city to light. Due to active research work in different periods of time, parts of the archaeological complex may be closed to the public.
On the island, you can see a building, which is rather rare for Greece. We are talking about the Catacombs near Plaka. According to the historians, they were built around the second century AD. The total length of the underground passages is 185 meters, which makes the Catacombs of Milos the largest object of its kind in the country. They were actively used by earlier Christians, most often as a refuge. Supposedly, about two thousand people are buried here. The only stone sarcophagus, in which, perhaps, the body of one of the first Christian martyrs is held, is of particular interest. Some scholars suggest that the sarcophagus could be used as an altar during worship.

From a historical point of view, the Papafranka Cave is also interesting. It was a real pirate den in the Middle Ages. The history fans will like the unique Mountain Museum, located on the beach called Paliorema. In addition to rock samples, the museum’s exposition includes various devices used in ore mining – both modern and those that were in use centuries ago. Those who are interested in mining activities should also visit Fiorihia, a mining complex that has become a real open-air museum.
