Sightseeing in Mellieha - what to see. Complete travel guide
On one of the most beautiful islands in the world – Malta – tourists can visit the enchanting resort town of Mellieha. This small town is famous for its fabulous coastal zones and neighborhoods that are still not crowded. Are you fond of nature and hiking? Mellieha is an ideal destination for this type of vacation. This is a town with comfortable beaches and picturesque nature that is ideal for families that decide to travel with small children. When comparing Mellieha to other island resorts, it is easy to see that this town is perfect for everyone who wants to forget about the rest of the world, restore energy, and clear mind of the unnecessary worries.
First settlers in the resort area appeared yet during the Neolithic age. Archaeologists, who have performed numerous excavations in Malta, proved this more than once. During the antiquity period, the troglodytes settled in this area and made local caves their home. In the period of Byzantine reign, the Arabs invaded the settlement, plundered it, and killed residents. This sad event happened in the 70s of the 9th century. During the long history of Mellieha, the settlement was suffering from the invasion of the pirates. These sea rogues made the life of local people even harder, and so residents of Mellieha were constantly living in fear and waiting for a new attack.
The beach that shares its name with the town remains one of the biggest attractions of Mellieha. It is incredibly popular with guests of Malta. The beach is situated in the town’s suburbs. Mellieha Beach is often called by its second name – Ghadira Bay. This is an incredibly comfortable beach for vacationers with small children. Water is shallow near the coast, and the depth increases slowly. Vacationers can swim safely, and parents do not need to worry about the safety of their children who always like to play in the water. Soft golden sand covers the beach area. Ghadira Bay is a clean and tidy beach, so visitors can lie on towels. However, it is always possible to rent sun umbrellas and loungers right on the spot.
There are many water-based activities that are available to guests of Mellieha Beach. Pavilions right on the coast offer water skiing and windsurfing equipment for rent. Waves are usually not high here, but it is still exciting to try various water sports here. In case you prefer a calmer and less extreme pastime, you can always choose to take a family ride on a banana boat or try kayaking. Besides the major water sports, vacationers can rent gear for different activities, so they can enjoy interesting and exciting beach recreation and not just leisurely sunbathe under the hot rays of Maltese sun. Rescue teams are on duty at the beach all day long to ensure everyone’s safety.
Golden Bay Beach is another popular coastal area in Mellieha. It is located in the northern part of the island. This beach is smaller than Ghadira Bay but tourists enjoy spending their free time here. Golden Bay Beach has one more peculiarity – its sand has a dark shade. Naturally, this doesn’t make recreation here less comfortable. It is still very comfortable to sunbathe using only a towel at Golden Bay. As usual, there is a rental office with sun umbrellas and loungers nearby.
Golden Bay is more suitable for adult visitors because the water near the coast is not as comfortable for playing as in Ghadira Bay. The Golden Bay Beach offers paddleboat riding for visitors. This is a popular destination for groups of young people who are eager to tame the sea waves by grabbing a surfboard or any other water “transport”. Finally, the Golden Bay Beach has one more peculiarity that makes it famous. Queen Elizabeth II had a vacation in a hotel near this beach.
The list of Mellieha beaches would be incomplete without Ghajn Tuffieha, which is located not far from the Golden Bay Beach. The Ghajn Tuffieha Beach is an incredibly picturesque coastal area that attracts visitors with its breathtaking views. The sand of an unusual orange shade covers this beach. The coastal water is comfortable for swimming for vacationers of different ages. There is a rental with sun loungers and umbrellas at the beach. That being said, no beachside entertainment is available for visitors. If you swim near the coast, you can let your children play and be sure of their safety. However, it is better not to swim far away from the beach as there can be a strong current.
Malta is an island with only one airport that receives scheduled and regular flights from many countries of the world. Upon arrival in Malta, tourists can rent a car. This is a comfortable way to explore the island and reach Mellieha. Of course, vacationers can always call a taxi. The taxi is quite cheap in Malta, and so it is comfortable and hassle-free to use this type of transport here. There is a more affordable way to get to Mellieha – by bus that departs from the airport.
