Culture of Marche Region. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Marche region is not only famous for its great beaches and fine cuisine. Here you can see the monuments from the times of the Roman Empire, famous Christian cult buildings, and architectural works from Medieval times and Renaissance. For example, there is a shrine in Loreto city, which is important to the whole Christian world. During the times of crusades, the Angeli family brought here the house, where the Virgin Mary has lived. That same place, where the Immaculate Conception, Annunciation, and Resurrection happened. The Holy House is surrounded by a marble sarcophagus, around which nine chapels are built, painted by the artists from different parts of the world.
To someone, Marche may seem as a place for lazy tourists, who just want to lie on the sun and swim in a warm sea. However, there are things to do even for the most active travelers, who … Open
Definitely visit Ascoli Piceno city, if you don’t want to miss a chance to visit the place, which existed before Rome was built. The locals are very proud of that fact. Besides the walks in the old city center and visits to the many local museums, you should take a look at Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Arringo. Those squares are very beautiful and show the spirit of ancient Italy. In Porto San Giorgio you will see the Medieval buildings, as the city was hardly rebuilt since the 11th century. The same about Fermo – a couple of decades ago they had still been using rainwater harvesting system, constructed by the Romans.
In Ancona pay attention to Mole Vanvitelliana. Built in the 18th century, this place has already been a hospital, a prison, and barracks, and a tobacco factory. Now it is opened for tourists. Not far from Mole there is Porta Pia, a great example of Baroque architecture, which was also built in the 18th century. There is also the Citadel in Ancona – a fortress, built at the beginning of the 16th century and perfectly-preserved until the present time. The most famous monument of Ancona is the Arch of Trajan, a unique construction, which over lived the Roman Empire for centuries. It was built in the 1st century, and though it lost some of its décors because of the actions of the Huns and the Saracens, is still in its original form. Near Ancona, there are also ruins of an old amphitheater from the times of the height of the Roman Empire. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

The Cathedral of Ancona is also quite remarkable. The remains of St. Kiriak are still preserved here and worship services are conduct in this building, constructed in the 10th century. A kilometer from the Cathedral, there is the Plebiscito Square, where San Domenico Church is located. The Merchants’ Lodge in Ancona, which construction began at the end of the 14th century, is also quite interesting. San Francesco alle Scale, Saint Pellegrino and Theresa’s church, the Holy House at the market square, the Church of The Holy Mother, the Palace of the Elders – all these buildings in Ancona of Medieval era almost haven’t been affected by the time.
Visit the National Archaeological Museum of Marche, the Francesco Podesti’s Pinacoteca, walk in the Cardeto Park, take a look at the Calamo Fountain, go to the Muse Theatre – there are a lot of things to see in Ancona. But do not limit your journey only to the visit of the region’s capital. Go to Pesaro.
