Cultural sightseeing in Madagascar. What to visit - museums, temples, castles and palaces

Madagascar is not famous as a country for sightseeing. There is nothing strange in this because there are not many historic and architectural landmarks here. All the main attractions of the country are in some way or another connected with nature. These are national parks, reserves, forests, coastal areas, and all kinds of activities associated with them. That being said, if you still want to learn more about Madagascar from a cultural point of view, there are interesting places to visit. First of all, this is the island’s capital, Antananarivo. It is also a good idea to visit the Nosy Be Island that has several important landmarks.

The Rova of Antananarivo (Rova Ambohimanga) is a fabulous palace complex that is widely recognized among the main landmarks of the capital city. The complex includes the twin palaces of Manjakamiadana, as well as such palaces as Mahitsielafanjaka, Tranovola, and Manampisoa. This is where visitors can see gorgeous tombs of Malagasy rulers. The presidential palace is fabulous, but the complex of ministry buildings is no less amazing. The prime-minister’s palace and the old building of the main library also deserve a mention.

Picturesque Independence Street is the best place for a stroll. There are many shops, restaurants, and cafes that are targeted at tourists. The biggest market on the island, Zuma, is located not far away. The variety of items for sale is so big that it is hard to choose what to purchase. Tourists will hardly find a better place to buy memorable gifts and souvenirs. If the primary aim is to purchase items by local craftsmen, consider visiting Andruvuhangi (Andhra Nuahangi).
