Culture of Lemgo. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

The main treasure of Lemgo is its unique historic buildings. Many of them were badly damaged during the Second World War, but in the postwar years, most of the urban architecture was restored. Hexenbürgermeisterhaus dating back to 1571 is considered to be the most spectacular architectural monument. Its Renaissance-style facade decorated with elaborate wood carvings and non-standard decorative elements is striking with its splendor.

In the second half of the 16th century, the luxurious house belonged to the mayor Hermann Cothmann who became famous for his cruel disposition. There was a period of witch-hunts in Lemgo when the mayor used active laws to eliminate his political opponents. Dozens of executions took place directly in the house. Today, the old building houses a thematic museum. It has gathered instruments of torture and objects that were used to execute people suspected of witchcraft.
Another spectacular Renaissance monument is the old Town Hall building that was recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site quite recently. Its main characteristic lies in the fact that various fragments of the building were built at different times. The number of Lemgo residents was growing rapidly in the 15-16 centuries, so the city authorities had to expand the Town Hall constantly. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

The most spectacular is the central part of the building dated late 15th century. It is a vivid example of Gothic architecture. The last time the building was radically changed was the 16th century when it was supplemented with bright elements in the Renaissance style.
There are also unique historic monuments in the vicinity of the city, including the wonderful Brake Castle. The first official mention of it dates back to the early 14th century. In fact, the castle was erected much earlier. Originally, it was built not only for defensive purposes but as the residence of the counts of Lippe. The first owner of the castle at the end of the 12th century was Lord Bernhard II. The castle was used to hold the most important meetings and large-scale celebrations.
