COVID-19 Era Requirements for Traveling to Portugal

News This vacation season was greatly spoiled by the coronavirus pandemic that ruined the travel plans of millions of people worldwide. While many destinations still limit tourism or do not accept tourists at all, some places are available for visiting, and Portugal is one of them. This European country is famous for its rich culture, beautiful cities, and charming countryside. Hotels in Lisbon and Porto hotels are a popular choice of urbanites in search of short city breaks. If you’d like to visit Portugal this autumn or winter, the following article can provide some valuable information.

Portugal is the first country in Europe that received the Safe Travels stamp by WTTC. To help tourists enjoy a safe and trouble-free vacation, Turismo de Portugal developed a special “Clean&Safe” stamp. This stamp marks cafes, restaurants, and tourist activities that comply with hygiene and safety standards.

Here are the countries that have no restrictions to visit Portugal: all EU countries, the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Residents of the following countries are allowed to fly to and from Portugal: all the countries mentioned above plus China, Australia, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand, Morocco, Japan, Tunisia, Rwanda, Georgia, Uruguay, and Thailand.

Countries can have different requirements for tourists that return from Portugal. For example, British travelers should read their home country’s policy about quarantine restrictions. Portugal doesn’t force tourists to have the negative COVID-19 test unless they are heading to the Azores or the archipelago of Madeira. Passengers flying from all other destinations can enter the country for “essential travel” purposes. They must have a negative COVID-19 test made within 72 hours before the time of departure. This rule doesn’t apply to travelers in transit who do not leave the airport.

The essential travel category includes the following people: citizens of EU countries and Schengen Associated countries, as well as family members of these citizens; people traveling for family reunion, study, business, and some other purposes. Foreigners with legal residence in Portugal also fall into this category. Additionally, tourists need to check visa requirements to enter Portugal. Finally, it is possible to enter Portugal by car using the border with Spain.
