Three-fourths of Travelers Plan to Choose Eco-Accommodation

News There has been a shift in the preferences and ambitions of travelers in recent years. Nowadays, more and more people around the world realize that traveling is not only about booking a hotel in Madrid or Paris and enjoying a vacation. Modern tourists want to have as little impact on the environment as possible and turn to sustainable offerings. Recent studies only prove this trend.

Approximately eight people out of ten or 82% of travelers label sustainable travel as an important factor to them. More than half (58%) say that they take sustainability into consideration when they make a booking and are determined to do so in the future. An interesting observation: 54% of travelers, who see how tourism impacts the environment, choose to become sustainable and try to reduce their impact in everyday life.

While more people become interested in environment-friendly tourism, many of them (38%) have no idea how they can reduce their impact on the environment. Half of the respondents (50%) mention that the industry still has much to develop because there are not enough sustainable travel opportunities at the moment. Furthermore, many tourists say that people need more education about hotel sustainability and options available because many travelers are simply not aware of them.

To help people to learn more about sustainable travel, there are several initiatives like Travalyst founded by the Duke of Sussex together with several large industry players. This framework will make it easier to find hotels that have high environmental standards. This initiative may find customer approval since 74% of global travelers say that want to stay in eco-friendly accommodation this year. Almost half of respondents (44%) already have the experience of staying in an eco-accommodation. A bit more than a quarter of respondents (26%) say that they are not interested in booking eco-accommodation because there is no labeling system to mark such hotels.

Eco-label can become a powerful attraction mark that will make hotels with this label successful. 62% of travelers admit they would be more inclined to pick a hotel that has this “eco-label”. How can travelers be more sustainable besides booking the “right” hotel? Alternative transport methods can reduce the carbon footprint. Choosing less-visited destinations to reduce overcrowding can also help, as well as reducing waste and single-use plastic during vacations.
