Portugal Becomes a New Culinary Capital of Europe

News For many years, Portugal was overlooked as vacationers were mostly interested in Spain. However, the situation has started changing in recent years. Portugal becomes not only a popular country for city breaks but also an emerging destination for all foodies. Recently, three more restaurants in Portugal have received their first Michelin star. At the moment, the country has twenty restaurants with one Michelin star and six restaurants with two Michelin stars. Portugal demonstrates its exceptional cuisine, and tourists do not necessarily need to book a hotel in Lisbon or Porto and visit these cities to try it.

In order to make it easier for vacationers to find gourmet cuisine, Tap Air Portugal (the national airline) has prepared a special program for its clients. The program is called “Taste the Star”. Skilled Michelin star chefs prepare exclusive local cuisine delicacies that are then served to passengers of the airlines’ business class.

Foodies have much to do in Portugal. For years, the country was in the shadow of Spain, and somehow Portugal remained little discovered for tourists. Nowadays, in the era of authentic experiences and holidays in less famous places, Portugal is really in the spotlight. Even hotels in Braga and Coimbra get more attention these days.

As for travelers, it may be harder to find best restaurants outside tourist hotspots, new customizable trips dedicated to local cuisine have become increasingly popular. These trips are planned by true experts who know where to find the best local food in the country. Of course, without this insider knowledge, it may be hard to find where to eat best petiscos in Alentejo or fine codfish in Aveiro. The most popular tour guides dedicated to cuisine in Portugal cover the vibrant food scene in Lisbon and Porto, a visit to Sintra that is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and exploration of the Douro Valley that is well-known for its wine.

The food scene in Portugal is developing so fast that new restaurants appear every day in different corners of the wonderful country. Vibrant and dynamic Portuguese cuisine makes the country one of the best destinations in Southern Europe. Such places as Bolhao market in Porto or La Ribeira market in Lisbon are full of visitors in search of authentic delicacies. Outstanding seafood, fine wine, and fantastic appetizers are sure to bring more guests to Portugal this year, much to the delight of the local tourism industry.
