Novi Sad City in Serbia is the First European Cultural Capital Outside the EU

News It seems that 2021 is going to be prosperous for hotels in Novi Sad, Serbia, as this city was voted to become the European Cultural Capital 2021. This is the first time that a city outside the European Union gets this honorable title. Needless to say, this will bring the attention of numerous travelers to Novi Sad and Serbia in general.

Novi Sad offers the program concept named Novi Sad 2021 and its main slogan “4 new bridges”. First of all, Novi Sad wants to strengthen its positions as a popular event destination. The Serbian city hosts 200 cultural events every year, including EXIT Festival that is the laureate of 2018 Best European Festival Award. The city plans to increase the number of events, adding more interesting festivals dedicated to music, film, theatre, and art.

The choice of a new European Cultural Capital was not random. This way the European Commission for Education, Culture, Youth, and Sport wants to strengthen cultural links between the EU and countries that want to become full members of the Union. Novi Sad has always been recognized as one of the main cultural centers in Serbia, but the new title makes it an important cultural center of European level. This nomination may work like a magnet, bringing more tourists to the city, boosting its development, and expanding its creative potential.

Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia, with only the capital city of Belgrade being ahead. In recent years, young tourists have been making more bookings in Novi Sad hotels. The beautiful city on the Danube River is a popular location for many notable events. Every year, Novi Sad hosts EXIT music festival in July. This is the time when youth from all over Europe come to the city to relax and have fun. In 2017, the festival’s 35 concerts attracted 200,000 visitors from 60 countries.

The city also has much to offer in terms of sightseeing. Perhaps, the Petrovaradin Fortress is the most famous landmark of Novi Sad. It rises proudly, making the skyline even more picturesque. Of course, it would be a mistake not to mention the historical neighborhood of Stari Grad that is home to numerous museums, restaurants, shops, monuments, and cafes. Fans of nature will certainly enjoy a visit to the Fruška Gora National Park that is located approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from the central part of the city.
