European Capitals of Culture for 2019 are Revealed

News Every year, the European Union reveals new Capitals of Culture in order to draw attention to these cities and build a European identity of the region. Needless to say, these destinations become particularly popular with travelers. So, meet the two cities that possess the honorable title of the European Capital of Culture for 2019: Plovdiv and Matera.

Soon hotels in Plovdiv will be full of new guests as the international visibility is guaranteed during the whole year. Plovdiv is the first city in Bulgaria that was chosen for this title. To be worthy of it, the Bulgarian city offers a range of interesting activities and projects under the motto “Together”. There are more than 300 projects in total that have been organized in the city and the South Central Region of Bulgaria. Other participating cities are Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, and Sofia.

Travelers will be able to participate in numerous festivals and special events that unleash the cultural heritage of this place, allowing visitors to get to know local communities. It is a great opportunity to learn the history of Plovdiv and learn more about challenges that the city has to face. The range of activities is so broad that everyone will find something they like. Numerous exhibitions, Cyrillic alphabet master classes, a chance to meet local Roma and Turkish communities, and various events dedicated to the Western Balkans – these are just some of the activities that are available to travelers in Plovdiv in 2019. The opening ceremony will take place on January 11-13.

The Italian city of Matera has another motto for its program, “Open Future”. The activities and events offered by this city are focused on collaboration and cultural infusion. For example, travelers are welcome to attend “Re-reading Renaissance” and learn interesting information about the artistic past of Apulia and Basilicata. Ars Excavandi is a fantastic choice for everyone interested in the subterranean architecture. It would be also a mistake not to mention Poetry of primes – a special exhibition dedicated to the role of mathematics in works of artists of different epochs.

These are not all activities, so consider booking a Matera hotel right away and participate in 27 projects developed in collaboration with partners from Europe. For example, the first open-air performance of Cavalleria Rusticana opera will take place in Matera. The celebration of the Capital of Culture title will be held in Matera somewhat later – on January 19-20. That said, the ceremony is worth attending as it will bring together 2,000 musicians from the region of Basilicata and Europe.
