The ITB Berlin Convention event, which will take place from 6 to 9 March 2019, will cover a number of hot themes in the travel industry, prospects, and challenges of the industry. The series of meetings and workshops will bring together senior politics, famous scientists, and leading businesses, who will discuss, among everything else, four major challenges of modern tourism.
Global warming and climate change is a growing problem for humanity in general and travel industry in particular. This problem is also sharp for hotels that need to work over improving their environmental sustainability. It is important to think of ways to reduce the impact of travelers on the destinations they visit. As a rule, tourists need to use some means of transport in order to reach their travel destination. Therefore, transport is an essential part of the tourism industry, and bad transport connection is often responsible for poor performance of the hospitality industry. This makes future mobility the second problem. Participants of the meeting will discuss how to make transport cheaper, more comfortable, and more sustainable.
Overtourism has quickly become a significant problem for many destinations. Barcelona hotels are very popular, but numerous tourists make it less comfortable for locals to live in this city. Venice is even in a more difficult position. One of the most famous and unique cities in the world is changing drastically, so local authorities even want to limit the number of hotels in Venice. As overtourism may become a big problem in the future, it is important to combat it with, for example, digital technologies.
Finally, for the hospitality industry, it is essential to discuss the change in customer demands. Nowadays, there is an avid shift in the definition of luxury. Customers are less interested in “bling bling” and require more “non-material luxury”. Old categories of luxury do not appeal to young travelers much, so businesses that look forward must be prepared to meet individual requirements. Digital channels and apps change the way modern travelers choose and book tickets, hotels, and various services, and that is something that the hospitality industry cannot neglect.
ITB Berlin Convention is a part of ITB Berlin 2019, the biggest travel trade show in the world. This year, the large-scale event attracted more than 10,000 companies from 186 countries and almost 170,000 visitors.
