Another Successful Year for British Tourism

News Last year was definitely a great one for hotels in the UK. They managed to set a record in terms of international arrivals to the country that added 4.6% to 40.3 million in total. That is significantly more than a year ago when 38.5 million travelers visited the country.

There are several reasons for such success and, surprisingly, Brexit is one of them. The vote to leave the EU has had a negative impact on the British pound, making the country more affordable for foreign guests. Many European tourists chose to spend their vacations in the UK. Therefore, there has been a steady growth in arrivals from such European countries as Germany, Spain, France, Romania, and Ireland. The number of visitors from Australia and the United States was skyrocketing in 2017.

Not only hotels in London enjoy higher revenues and more customers but also regional cities across the UK. Such events as “The British Tourism & Travel Show” that took place in Birmingham this week only help to promote the country and to attract more guests. Naturally, Birmingham hotels already benefited from this event as numerous visitors arrived in the city, including key industry players, tourism boards, media, and many more.

To keep the demand for vacation in the British Isles steady, travel authorities think of diversifying their offers and developing new programs and travel routes that would be appealing to visitors from all over the world. Regional cities and towns also introduce their own programs, advertise key attractions, and promote authentic experiences that they can offer. For example, Visit Scotland has declared 2018 the “Year of young people”. The country has prepared a whole range of activities that would fascinate and entertain young travelers, such as festivals, various events, road trips, and many more. Visit Scotland underline that they address not only people who are young of age but also those who feel “young at heart”. Tourism Ireland has a similar program, “Wild Atlantic Way”. It is focused on coastal adventures, including the longest coastal drive in the world, but also covers a number of other activities in six regions of the country. The program prepared by the Whales is called the “Year of the Sea” and covers national coastal routes, visits to castles, and exploration of mountain regions.

To make 2018 another successful year for the tourism industry of the UK, the country’s authorities plan to promote group travel and use more marketing channels on the social media to advertise different parts of the UK for both domestic and international visitors. They will also pay more attention to such emerging types of tourism as eco-tourism and adventure tourism.
