The EU is about to issue a new law that bans all kinds of single-use plastic. While this law is expected to appear before summer, Corinthia Palace Hotel in Malta made a step forward and decided to stop using plastic straws in its territory.
This decision is in line with the environment-friendly efforts of the hotel. There is no secret that plastic straws are bad for our nature because it takes more than 200 years to break them down. A number of British restaurants have already removed plastic straws from most drinks and currently bring them to customers only after a request. The campaign is approved by Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace as well.
The famous Malta hotel has a number of efforts that help the environment and local economy. Corinthia Palace has an extensive ECO program that includes steps to reduce the carbon footprint and support for local communities by buying fresh locally produced products. Now, Corinthia has decided to become a plastic straw free hotel. Of course, the iconic five-star hotel cannot leave its customers without straws. From now it offers paper straws with a wax covering that are available upon request. In the past, Corinthia was throwing as many as 40,000 straws every year.
In order to develop its environmental sustainability initiatives, Corinthia has a partnership with Just A Drop, a famous water-aid charity. Together, the companies made lives of 43,325 children and families in Zambia and Tanzania better by providing them with clean water. Corinthia and Just A Drop do not plan to stop and want to add more improvements that protect the environment and help people in need. The Malta hotel, in its turn, has the Corporate Social Responsibility agenda. In accordance with this document, the hotel tries to develop in three main areas, namely, environmental sustainability, community sustainability, and personal sustainability.
All Corinthia hotels have reduced water use. In three years, all hotels by this brand will save enough water to irrigate as many as 15,000 trees. Various charities, installation of solar thermal panels, and free loans for bicycle purchases are just some of the hotelier’s initiatives. Corinthia Palace Hotel is often referred to as the best hotel in Malta, so it is a leading hotel in many terms, and environment-friendly initiatives are no exception.
