St. Peter’s Square in Manchester to Get a 300-key Hotel and a Large Apart-hotel

News In their attempt to revamp the look of the city skyline, Manchester council made a series of decisions regarding the demolishing of old buildings and replacing them with new ones. The regeneration of St. Peter’s Square was also green lighted, and so a new tower building will be added to the center of the city. The decision caused some controversy among local people.

Peterloo House, a derelict building located right behind the One office on St. Peter’s Square, will be demolished and then a new 20-storey hotel will be built on its site. The new Manchester hotel will have 300 guest rooms and will occupy floors one to eight, and a new apart-hotel with 262 beds will open in the building on the floors nine to twenty. The reconstruction plans were approved on the latest planning meeting of Manchester council.

Constructed in 1970, Peterloo House was abandoned in recent years and, therefore, stood unused. The demolition of the old building is one of the latest decisions about the upgrade of the square. Initial plans regarding the redesign of the plaza appeared yet five years ago. At that time it was decided to revamp the area around the town hall and create a “civic quarter”. Peterloo House is number Three building on the square, with numbers One and Two being already built and used as office space. St. Peter’s Square also got new paving, tramlines, and the renovated Central Library.

Some buildings near the square are also being demolished, such as the old Odeon Theatre on Oxford Street. Soon another office building will appear there. There will also be a new apart-hotel by Motel One. The chain already has hotels on Piccadilly and Cross Street in Manchester. The entrances will be located on Dickinson Street and at the corner of Dickinson and George Street. The apart-hotel will have no parking.

There is already some information about the apart-hotel. It will offer studio, one and two bedroom apartments. It is expected to open in 2020 or earlier, and the opening of the apart-hotel would create 170 new jobs. The renovation of St. Peter’s Square is just one step in the global city transformation program of the council. For example, London Road Fire Station is to get a major revamp that includes new shops, offices, restaurants, and even art galleries. Additionally, a cluster of skyscrapers will appear on Trinity Island and Albion Street.
