Hotels in Dubai have finally got a permission to build bars and restaurants on the roofs of their buildings. Such a practice is internationally popular, but until now it was prohibited in the UAE. The important decision was issued by Dubai Municipality in accordance with Decision 66 of 2007 that allows some modifications in the structure of buildings.
In order to make a restaurant, Dubai hotels now need to send a request and provide technical data as there are some requirements to the construction. For example, restaurants cannot occupy more than 50% of the total roof square, and the biggest allowed area for the dining facilities is limited to 1,000 square meters. Finally, the buildings should have a lateral slope of at least 1.5 meters on all sides. There are some other requirements, such as the number of parking spaces. In Dubai, all buildings are required to have a certain number of parking spaces in order not to create the deficit, and if some construction is added, it may require the addition of new parking spaces. In case it is not possible to offer new engineering or technical solutions for parking, hotels will be allowed to increase parking by 5%.
It is natural that many hotels in Dubai will want to open rooftop restaurants, but they will also have to pay a fee for the change of the original purpose of the roof. Precise drawings of restaurants need to be submitted to the municipality for the final decision.
