Marriott International announced the addition of the PlacePass technology to its loyalty program. The metasearch platform is added to the upgraded profile in order to make it more experiential. The upgrade is available for members of Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest, and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards more than 100 million people in total.
PlacePass is a startup that was founded just 2 years ago. With its help, Marriott will add more than 100,000 local experiences to approximately 800 destinations around the world. This is not a first attempt to help travelers enjoy authentic experiences wherever they go. Starwood Preferred Guest program launched a similar service yet in 2006, helping travelers redeem their points for nearly 6,000 experiences like tickets to various events, sports, and culture related experiences. PlacePass has allowed bringing this initiative to a brand new level.
According to Marriott, they want to help travelers access more destinations and do things they love in new places, whether during their vacation or in between. Some of the new activities available through PlacePass are already available. For example, travelers can attend the filming locations of the Downton Abbey TV series. During a VIP tour that starts from London, visitors will attend Bampton and Highclere Castle. Travelers in Tokyo are offered to know more about the history of sumo and even try to fight with a retired sumo wrestler. In Cambodia, Marriott offers a mountain biking tour in the Angkor Park in order to see the beautiful temple on a sunrise, and in Dubai guests can explore the desert life.
