Hong-Kong headquartered hotelier Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has named the first wine ambassador of the company. This is Gerard Basset, who won the title of the Best Sommelier in the World in 2010. He is also the only person who simultaneously holds such respectable titles as Master Sommelier, Master of Wine, and MBA Wine.
From now Basset will work together with Yang Lu, who is corporate wine director of Shangri-La Hotels. They both will try to improve wine program of the company and train sommeliers in hotels of the chain. Basset will also review wine selections at Shangri-La hotels in order to make sure they offer a balanced and structured menu. He will establish connections with wine estates worldwide to supply the hotels with amazing wines from boutique producers from all over the world.
These are not all responsibilities of the new wine ambassador. Basset will attend the second Wine Summit of Shangri-La Hotels that will take place in July. At the summit he will hold a day two long seminar where sommeliers will get useful knowledge, get practical skills and train blind tasting. Basset will also be one of judges in Shangri-La’s Best Sommelier Competition. Moreover, wine connoisseurs and amateur sommeliers are welcome to join a special conference which will be held at Shangri-La hotel in Beijing. At the conference, guests together with Basset and other top sommeliers of the hotel group will compare wine styles and enjoy wine tasting.
Basset started his partnership with Shangri-La last year, when he was invited to become a judge at the first sommelier contest in the hotel chain. He also helped developing programs for Shangri-La wine sommeliers.
