Guests of Stora Hotellet, which is located in the Swedish city of Umea, are welcome to try something really new. They can get acquainted with the maritime history of the city without leaving the hotel. The new design of Stora Hotellet combines sea elements with traditional elegance.
The design of the hotel was developed by Stylt Trampoli, who chose velvet and sailcloth, champagne colour and sea spray among main materials and shades. The designer says he wanted to express the ocean that flows to the hotel.
The building, which was constructed in 1895, was renovated with the help of funds provided by the local Seamen’s Mission. The building was the office for the Mission and the hotel. Previously, the hotel had the largest banquet hall in the town and a riverside terrace. After the renovation, Stora Hotellet (the name can be translated as Grand Hotel) got a theatre and a music pavilion. The main hall of the hotel is decorated with a three-storey plexiglass and rope chandelier. The hotel has 82 guestrooms, each of which belongs to one of six categories. Every category signifies one of preoccupations in a sailor’s life. The names sound quite poetical Passions, Freedom, Superstition, etc. Rooms also range in size and style guests can choose from spacious Master Suites to cabin-style rooms with bunk beds. There are also special rooms for families.
Dining facilities are represented by the Gotthard’s Krog restaurant. The restaurant is named after the first proprietor of the town. The menu mostly features food made from local ingredients, but dishes offered represent port cities from all over the world.
