Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts expressed their desire to support developing coffee industry of Haiti. Together with the Clinton Foundation, La Colombe Torrefaction, and Leslois Shaw Foundation, the internationally famous hotelier will serve Haitian coffee in its hotels. In the beginning, the coffee will be served in two locations in Four Seasons Hotel Toronto and Four Seasons Hotel New York, but the number of hotels offering it will be steadily increased.
The coffee served belongs to the heirloom typical variety. This is semi-wild grown coffee from the mountains near Thiotte. La Colombe Torrefaction is the organization that supplies the coffee. By promoting Haitian coffee on new markets, the abovementioned organizations help creating new jobs for Haitian people and improve their livelihood. For that reason, the Haiti Coffee Academy was established. This is a farm and an educational center, where local people can get all necessary training and can receive seeds and tools that will help them increase their yields.
Coffee has always been an important product for Haitian economy. Currently, this is the main source of income for over 100,000 farmers. Even a century ago, the country was one of main coffee exporters in the world, but the coffee production has decreased severely.
This initiative is a part of the Haiti support program by Four Seasons. After the earthquake of 2010, Four Seasons managed to raise over US$300,000 in donations. These funds were sent to Canadian Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, who helped the affected by the disaster.
