Just like other internationally famous hoteliers, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts has an extensive environmental program that is targeted at making the company’s hotels less harmful for our planet. Green Certification of its hotels’ restaurants is one of main parts of its work. The company certifies its restaurants in different countries of the world, but the US and Canada are, certainly, leaders in this field. Recently, the company announced that restaurants in all InterContinental hotels in the abovementioned countries had become “Certified Green Restaurants”. Such a title is given to restaurants that fit standards of the Green Restaurant Association.
In order to become “green”, 26 restaurants managed by the hotelier had to implement as many as 1,180 environmental steps in various areas, such as food, packaging, energy, chemicals, waste, water, and even building materials. For example, in order to be certified “green”, hotels had to avoid any use of polystyrene foam, and had to develop a full-scale recycling program. Some hotels have achieved really amazing results. For example, Ca Va Brasserie at InterContinental New York Times Square has a tremendous waste diversion rate of 95%! Some restaurants are also equipped with electric vehicle charging stations, such as InterContinental hotel in Chicago.
