Over 100m Euro Worth Jewels are Stolen from Hotel in Cannes

News French Riviera has been shocked by the recent dramatic theft. It is reported that jewels with the total value of almost 103 million euro have been stolen from a hotel in Cannes.

This is definitely the biggest robbery ever made in the Carlton hotel in Cannes and one of the biggest gem thefts in Europe in this century. The hotel hosted the exhibition of gems by the jeweller Leviev. It is reported that the gems were stolen by an armed man. By the way, this robbery is one of several high-profile robberies that have recently taken place in Cannes. Initially it was told that the value of stolen gems was 40 million euro, but after inventory check the Dubai organizer of the exhibition announced the new value of 103 million euro.

The thief has not been caught at the moment. Witnesses say the robber was alone and he was armed with a hand gun. He took away necklaces, rings and diamond encrusted watches from the exhibition that took place at the ground floor of the hotel. French police have already started investigation. The hotel’s staff say low security level is one of the reasons for the robbery. The wing with the exhibition had direct street access. Moreover, police were not even alerted about such an exhibition.

With the new value of gems announced, this robbery is likely to surpass one of the largest diamond thefts in history, which took place in 2003 in Antwerp Diamond Centre (Belgium). At that time, the total value of stolen diamonds was almost 100 million euro.

The Carlton hotel in Cannes on the Croisette promenade is known as one of the most luxurious and prestigious hotels in the city, so there’s nothing strange in the fact it attracts robbers. In August 1994, gunmen robbed the jewellery store in the hotel and took away jewels worth £30m.
