Porta Fira Towers hotel has been built in the city of Barcelona, Spain. This unique project by a Japanese architect Toyo Ito and b720 Arquitectos consists of two towers which contain a hotel and offices and are linked by an atrium. The height of each tower is 110 m.
A hotel tower has an organic form and appears to change depending on the point of observation as you move around it. The facade of this geometrically complex structure is divided into two types: the inner "skin" is composed of glass and aluminum panels for solving thermal, acoustic and security problems.
The outer skin of the design hotel is constructed of independent aluminium tubes. Tube ends are attached to ball-and-socket joints that allows to achieve the necessary depth of torsion. The exterior facade of the tower acts as a second skin, provides the tower’s variable geometry and texture.
The building of the Barcelona hotel is contained in a distorted cylinder which is clad in red metal panels and expands towards the top.
The main idea for architects was the establishment of the gateway to Barcelona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat from El Prat International Airport.
