At some time of its history it was turned into a theological college. Nowadays the building is under the protection of state. This is a valuable historical monument. In the old quarter of the city is the location of more than a hundred of ancient mosques. Each of them is unforgettable and unique. All of them have witnessed important events in the history of the city.
Among the religious sites of the city the most interesting ones are University of Al-Karaouine, Grand Mosque and Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Idriss II. They contain valuable historical artifacts, and the decoration of the halls remains untouched for already several centuries.
