In the historical center of Aachen, there are several shops that specialize in selling traditional gingerbread. It is a great place to purchase interesting sweet souvenirs for friends and family. There is an interesting legend about the invention of traditional Aachen gingerbread. In 1656, the city ran out of food because of a devastating blaze. One of the local confectioneries, who was an apprentice of the baker of Charles the Great, recalled the most favorite cookie of the famous king.
Delft Paysage The baker, who was long dead at that time, kept the recipe of the cookie in secret. In order to find out the recipe, the young confectioner called the devil and asked him to help to get the recipe. Using simple ingredients, the confectioner managed to cook such delicious gingerbread that even the devil ate it together with a metal tray used for serving. Nowadays, at the crossing of Koerbergasse and Buechel streets, one can see a symbolic monument dedicated to the popular national dessert. Not far from the monument, there is a museum with a café that exhibits ancient baking tins that once were used to cook gingerbread.
