Le Palais Ideal, France

From series “The Most Wonderful Castles and Palaces”
Year: 1912. Lenght: 26 meters. Height: 10 meters. Width: 14 meters.

In the French town of Hauterives is Palais idéal (the ideal palace) - a wonderful architectural monument with a unique history. Its founder was the ordinary village secretary Ferdinand Cheval, who began to realize his longing dream to build the beautiful palace, in 1879. The realization of the dream has lasted more than thirty years. The palace was finished in 1912 and surprised the guests of the tiny town with its impressive exterior design for more than a century.

Le Palais Ideal, France The fantastic building was literally constructed of command materials - stones, wire and cement mortar found on the street. Carrying the letters, the messenger has collected on the streets everything that could serve as a building material. The extent of the Ideal Palace is quite impressive. Its length is 26 meters, and the width - 14 meters. The height of the building varies from 8 to 10 meters, its facade is decorated with the incredibly interesting sculpture compositions of different styles.

After completion of the palace building, Cheval organized the excursions. He spent most of the money earned on building the mausoleum. Later it became the crypt of the humble Briefträger, which became known world-wide thanks to its strange and bold dream. Although the palace looks very brittle from the outside, it can be used as a residence. Its interior is made of stone and small shells. In some rooms, even the whimsical chandeliers were preserved from small shells made by the palace owner. Next - Hawa Mahal

Top destination around Le Palais Ideal - Rhone-Alpes

Rhone-Alpes region is famous for its magnificent nature; even its name derives from its natural attractions, the Rhone River and the Alps. The tourism industry is well-developed; local resorts don’t cease to surprise even the most discerning travelers. In mountainous areas, there are several well-known ski resorts; they have become venues for the Olympic Games for three times already. Both professional skiers and those who are just learning would like resting there. After active skiing training, you can relax in one of the cafes or explore the nature reserve.

There are eight nature reserves here; all of them are located in the foothills of the Alps. Each park strikes with original beauty; there are vineyards and olive groves, vast and tiny valleys. Adventurers can climb high into the mountains to the snow-covered peaks that seem lifeless and deserted only at first glance.

Travelers who are interested in art and culture won’t be disappointed. Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Grenoble have a lot of museums, exhibitions, galleries and theaters. Gourmets would also like these cities. Lyon is considered the gastronomic center of the country; every restaurant of the city offers a vast menu and an extensive wine list. The main specialties of these places are cheeses, meats and wine. You can continue exploring the gastronomic culture and history of the region during a trip to Chambery and Annecy. Near these towns there are several major vineyards. Excursions to wine cellars that would necessarily include tasting of the best varieties of the drink are arranged for tourists.
