Their founders were the representatives of the Dominican, Franciscan, and Augustinian orders. All monasteries share majestic appearance. In total, there are 14 monasteries on the slopes. One of the most interesting and well preserved monasteries is located in Huejotzingo area at the foot of the volcano.

This monastery is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The place is famous for unique works of art that have survived unchanged since the founding of the monastery. The importance of the city was increasing year after year, turning Cuernavaca into a rich Spanish settlement. However, it officially got the town status only in the 30s of the 19th century.
