San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting towns in Tuscany. In 1990 its historical centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historical symbol of the city is a complex of strengthening structures and 14 towers. Every tower has its own history because every tower was built by one local family.
So, the well-off locals tried to underline their crucial finance and social status. That’s why it was spent a lot of money for the building. According to the historical data, in the Medieval time, there were built about 60 towers but only 14 were saved until today. Torre Grossa is the tallest tower in San Gimignano, with 54 meters high. Torre del Diavolo is the most mysterious, twin towers Torri Dei Salvucci are the most beautiful.
On the territory of the historical centre you also can find some marvellous palaces. One of them is the Communal Palace, which was built in the first part of the 14th century. Nowadays it is a home for an outstanding art gallery. Gamucci Palace and Ficarelli Palace have placed in their halls the items from the main city museum. Experienced tourists try to visit San Gimignano at last weekends of July for the traditional art festival.
