Medina of Marrakesh, Morocco

From series “The Unesco World Heritage Sites in Africa”
Marrakech is the most visited and colourful city in Morocco, whose historic center is famous all over the world thanks to incredible architectural sights and lively markets. In 1985, the Medina of Marrakesh was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many tourists know it under the unofficial name 'Red City'. The thing is that old clay buildings and fortifications with red walls are the most important landmarks of the old town.

Medina of Marrakesh, Morocco The central square of Medina is Djemaa el Fna, life on which does not freeze literally for a minute. This is the largest place in Africa. Today it is hard to imagine that in this picturesque and busy square criminals were executed a few centuries ago. Here you can always meet sellers of sweets and water, as well as acrobats and dancers who present their talents. The most interesting act begins on the square at dawn, when it turns into a huge open-air restaurant. There are mangal and vats everywhere, in which traditional national dishes (meat and rice) are cooked.

In the immediate vicinity of the square are many unique historical and religious objects. The most popular sites are the Bahia Palace and the Mosque of Kutubia. An ordinary walk through the narrow alleyways of Medina gives a lot of unforgettable impressions. Here, one can discover interesting souvenir shops and restaurants, where guests are offered the most popular national dishes. Next - Stone Town of Zanzibar

Top destination around Medina of Marrakesh - Marrakech

Meat dishes gourmands will be much enthused with plenty of kebab sorts which may be tried as in upscale gastronomy establishments so in small street cafés. One should definitely try grilled lamb called Mechoui. This popular meat treat is cooked only in the oven. The meat turns as tender and toothsome as it just melts in the mouth.
The most common sort of dessert is the marshmallow. The sweet treat is made in hundreds of varieties. The almond marshmallow is considered to be typical of Marrakesh. The sweet nut treat features specific and original taste. Considering traditional local treats of Marrakesh, tajin is most worth noticing. The treat has got its name from a crock as this is exactly the crockery the local people prefer to cook beef in.

Before cooking the meat is pickled then the beef is stuffed in crocks and long stewed in the oven. Tajin is one of those treats which are richly added with herbs and spices during cooking as these give the meat inimitable shades of flavors. Marrakesh folks enjoy an ethnic drink being sweet mint tea. Local people can drink up to 10 cups of this refreshing and recharging drink per day. Remarkably as it is, but a hot mint tea is the best means to cope with extreme heat.
