In Italy on the territory of Orvieto town has placed an underground city that is one of the most interesting in the whole world. It was founded by Etruscan in the 8th- 3rd centuries BC. Earlier there was a huge Etruscan city in Volusia. These undergrounds had a lot of functions. There locals were hiding in the city besiegement, and also save their cattle and precious items.
Originally the underground labyrinths were used as the underground ways. With their help, it was possible to get to the plain. Then under the ground were built stables and mills, incrementally they were used as shelters. Also, there has saved rooms that were used for rainwater harvesting and several wine cellars. Locals used these tunnels for hundreds of years. There were craft producers, a huge olive oil manufacturing plant. That is located right under the central Orvieto square.
The most valuable found was the prehistorical tombs. Etruscan had made a lot of necropoleis. Underground Orvieto is one of the most explored underground cities in the world. There were found hundreds of historical artefacts: ancient jars, funeral merchandises, weapon and Etruscan household items. Orvieto has a wonderful excursion around its undergrounds for travellers. During the excursion, it is possible to take photos and make videos for free.
