Baikal Lake, Russia

Among the natural attractions of Russia, the most famous and amazing one is Lake Baikal. This lake of tectonic origin is located on the territory of Eastern Siberia and is the deepest and largest freshwater lake on the planet. The length of the lake is 636 km, and the width is 79.5 km, the total area of the reservoir reaches a record level of 31,772 square kilometers. As for the depth of the freshwater lake, its average is more than 744 meters, and the maximum reaches 1642 meters.

The theory of the formation of a huge lake after numerous and lengthy studies raises a lot of controversy. According to scientists, the lake was formed more than 25 million years ago in a rift basin. The reason for the formation of the latter is not known to scientists for certain, only the fact that for millions of years the depression continues to settle and, therefore, has a direct effect on the formation of the lake remains unchanged.

Baikal is remarkable not only for its impressive scale and unusual theory of formation. It is the center of a unique natural area. Directly in the lake there are more than 2600 species of animals, among which 50% are endemic animals. Baikal's water is rich in oxygen, which creates a comfortable environment for the development and residence of a variety of aquatic animal species.
