Kyushu Island has a huge Aira Volcano. Its length is 23 kilometres and 17 kilometres width. According to the scientists’ research, this caldera has appeared about 22 000 years ago after a tremendous volcano explosion. Even now the volcano is quite dangerous for the planet. On the territory of the caldera is placed Kagoshima town, not far from it you can see a young active composite Sakurajimais volcano.
It was formed 13 000 years ago and now is one of the most active Japanese volcanoes. Its last eruption was in 1914. Before it, an earthquake series came to the region. It has been erupted for several months and has drastically changed the surrounding landscapes. The erupted lava made up a new Sakurajimais peninsula. About 1 000 years the volcano erupted regularly and, in such way, decreased the possibility of the Aira Volcano eruption. This volcano is more dangerous than the Sakurajimais volcano.
Tourists like to keep watch over the Sakurajimais volcano. A lot of people come to see how the fountains of lave go from the vent funnel. The top of the volcano is usually covered with a cloud of smoke. Ferries get people to the volcano and guides tell interesting excursions about it. Recently there was opened an interesting museum that is dedicated to the history of the Sakurajimais volcano’s eruptions. There was collected a lot of vivid pictures made during the eruption. Also, there is represented a collection of interesting geological simples.
