On the Oahu Island is still a world famous, one of the most visited on the Earth crater - Diamond Head. The crater of British seafarers, who have disembarked on the coast near the crater in the 19th century, has received the 'more brilliant' name. In researching the crater, they have found the numerous calcite crystals, which they first thought of as diamonds. Today, the majestic crater is a landmark of the Vaikiki district and is one of the most striking natural attractions in the world.
Part of the crater is now used for land purposes. In a field of the crater are the antennas and locators. The other territory of the crater, not far from the popular health resort Honolulu, is open to the tourists and is considered an ideal place for hikes. The scientists suggest that Diamondhead is one of the oldest craters on the planet. Its age is about 200,000 years. For the last time, Diamondhead volcano erupted about 150,000 years ago.
During the research of the crater the curious tourists can see an interesting historical sight, Ruger Fort. This was the first US military garrison in Hawaii. After more than a century, some elements of the military buildings and even the secret tunnels created by the crater walls have been preserved in the crater. The volcanic crater is also popular with fans of the 'Lost' series, which was shot near these picturesque places.
