Year: 1860.

Cathedral of Nativity of Blessed Virgin was built in 1860 in Rostov-on-Don. Originally in the 18th century, there was a small church. In the middle of the 19th century, the population of the city has drastically increased. That’s why the city government decided to build a new stone cathedral. The church worked until 1937 and after on orders of the Soviet reign it was closed. On its large area was made a zoo. During the Second World War, the building was used as a storage. Some parts of the cathedral were destroyed by the military attacks.

In 1950 the cathedral was renovated. Specialists could not only to repair its marvellous façade but also some parts of the inner decoration. The main thing that was renewed is the art paintings. Today the cathedral is a great monument in the Russian Revival style. The cathedral has an unusual three-storied iconostasis.

This wonderful cathedral is included in every city tour program in Rostov-on-Don. People who keen on church art must visit the Cathedral of Nativity of Blessed Virgin. A famous painter Volkov worked on the cathedral decoration. He tried to reconstruct the original paintings on the walls and ceiling. The Cathedral Square is also an interesting place in Rostov. There are placed several symbolic monuments. In 1999 there was placed a monument to Alexander II.

The most religious monument in the city is the Cathedral St. Blessed Virgin built in the middle of the 19th century. It is a miracle that the cathedral has been preserved to this day. Another interesting religious monument is Surb-Hach Church built by Armenian settlers in the 18th century. Before, the church had been a part of the big monastery that has not been preserved to this day. After over 200 years, the tiny church in classic style has remained almost unchangeable. It houses several important religious relics. The most valuable now is the stone cross transferred here from the historic town Ani.
