From series “Largest and Famous Nuclear Test Sites”
Year: 1945.

Alamogordo Test Site is situated on the territory of New Mexico, the USA. The name it received thanks to the nearby so-called city. This test site is famous because right here was exploded the first nuclear bomb in the human history. The operation was called “Trinity”. The government of the USA had eight possible places for test site location. In the end, there was chosen a desert area in New Mexico.

Alamogordo Test Site, USA One of the main conditions was an absence of Indian in the nearby regions. The test site was ready to work in 1945 and had quite a small area – 145 square meters. In 1945 on the Alamogordo Test Site was experienced the plutonium bomb. For the nuclear weapon of the 20th century, it was an important step forward. Today the place of the explosion is a popular touristic place.

Twice a year, on 1st April and 1st October you can join an excursion. During which you can see not only a famous shell crater but other interesting places on the test site. The access to the polygon is restricted because until now it is used for test of different types of weapons. The excursion around the test site is one of the most unusual things in life. In the crater, travellers can see a unique mineral that is called trinity. The desert sand, largely made of silica, melted and became a mildly radioactive light green glass. A part of this mineral is all-in-all for many world collectors. Next - Reggane Test Site
