The highest natural arch on Earth is located in the territory of Utah, in the 'Arches' National Park. The arch with a romantic name Rainbow Bridge reaches 90 meters in height and stretches over a deep canyon. Like many arches on the territory of the nature reserve, it consists of fire-red sandstone. Outwardly, a huge stone bridge of bright colour, which is peculiar to vary depending on the level of illumination, really reminds a huge frozen rainbow.
Rainbow Bridge is located in one of the most inaccessible areas of the reserve, it was discovered relatively recently. Many equally amazing legends are associated with this surprising natural formation. The bridge, not far from Mount Navajo, was very well known to the indigenous tribes of the Indians, who gave it its present name. The aborigines thought a beautiful arch was a real frozen rainbow, and believed in its mystical powers.
In the beginning of the 20th century a research group, impressed by the legends of the Indians, went on a search for the 'eternal rainbow'. To the greatest astonishment of the researches, they have indeed found a huge natural arch in an implied, incredibly hard-to-reach district. For centuries, the Indians piloted the stone bridge and considered it a gate connecting the Earth and the sky. Since the discovery, archaeological excavations have been carried out near the arch. The number of finds near the natural formation is enormous and indicates that the locals knew about it thousands of years ago.
