Izamal, Mexico

Mexican Izamal city is unusual too. Its second name is the Yellow City. About 15 thousand people live there permanently. The small city appeals tourists with its original deep-yellow-coloured buildings. In the city, there are a lot of beautiful historical stone buildings and churches. Nowadays all of them are yellow. Izamal has a great number of historical monuments. Thereby you can see the mysterious Maya pyramids, buildings of the colonial period and even modern architectural monuments.

The city is surrounded by several major archaeological areas. The first settlement was there in the 6th century BC. One of the most recognized buildings in the Yellow city is a large Franciscan Monastery. It was named after San Antonio de Padua in the 16th century. Nowadays it is the largest building in the whole town. The Monastery is decorated with a large landscaped garden.

Several years ago, the city government made up a decision to repaint all houses in the historical part in general colour. They did it for tourist attraction. Earlier the city wasn’t popular among travellers. They visited the nearby cities and didn’t pay attention to this place. Thanks to the challenging idea of the government, nowadays the Mexican Yellow city is the place of the global significance.
