One of the most dangerous and difficult roads located in Alaska, Dalton Highway, has long been associated with an increased risk. The length of the road is 141 miles. It was built as a service road to connect the oil tank farms located in Alaska with other areas of the country. For many years the road is filled with truck traffic. That’s why it’s impossible to find smooth road surface here.
Huge potholes on the roadway and clouds of dust that are raised by trucks remain a major cause of serious accidents. Most of the year the track is covered with an ice crust. So it is not surprising that the Dalton Highway is in the ranking of most emergency roads. For the public transport the highway was opened just over 30 years ago. Previously only specialized vehicles heading to the oil fields could travel on the road.
For several decades Dalton Highway remains one of the favourite walking routes for travellers who visit this part of America. The north of Alaska is incredibly beautiful during a warm season. The road passes through dense forests and picturesque meadows, and this attracts many tourists. Those who choose to enjoy the spectacular scenery of Alaska should not forget about the dangers on the road.
